ecoville architechs was formed in 1996 to help professional and owner-builders with planning, design and construction using ecological materials and methods and to educate people about ecological practices. While much of our work integrates straw bale construction into relatively conventional foundations and roof structures we also have experience with earthen construction methods like cob, light-clay-straw, adobe, round pole framing, living roofs and earthen floors. In our workshops and on-site buildshops we teach about materials, methods and philosophy of natural building and ecological living. Our holistic design philosophy places us within the living world. The way we choose to live not only affects our health but the health of the environment so design work for a building considers all elements of the site ecology. As Earth is threatened by human actions it is imperative that we recognize our interconnectedness with nature, to re-assess the ways that we use both energy and materials. Should we build from materials that have been shipped half way round the world, using large amounts of energy in the process? Or can we use locally found materials that will do the job as well, if not better?

We strive to accommodate the home owner in our work. Our goal is to give the client what they want. Many of the houses you see on these pages are the visions of the owner. We offer advice, suggestions and expertise, but ultimately decisions are the choice of those who will live with them.

ecoville architechs is comprised of architect, Howard Switzer and permaculture designer, Katey Culver.

Howard has been designing passive solar, ecologically-minded homes for 30 years. His commitment to healthy, low-impact shelter led him to straw bale and cob construction fifteen years ago. With a strong foundation in space planning Howard’s designs help lessen the footprint and honor the art of building.

Katey provides design, consultation and training to owner-builders and construction crews in straw bale and earthen building techniques and natural plasters from a permaculture perspective. This holistic design approach allows life in, and around, the created space to be comfortable, effective and beautiful.
